In honor of Lime Green Giraffe’s 10th anniversary, we’re holding a Random Words Writing Contest! Below, you will see 16 words. Your task is to write an amazing story using three or more of the words from the list below! Excited?!??!

The rules for this contest are as follows:

1. Your story has a minimum of 100 words, and a maximum of 500.
2. Your story must be fiction, but can be about any subject you wish.
3. You must use at least three words from the required list.
4. All entries must be emailed to gspublication@hotmail.com by midnight ET on October 31, 2014. (Happy Birthday, JGL!)
5. You must be a registered Girl Scout or Girl Guide between the ages of 11-17 to enter.
6. Every girl is limited to one (1) entry.
7. Be sure to include the following information in the body of your submission email: your first and last name, age, unit and an email address where we can contact you.
8. First, second, and third place stories will be published in the February issue of Lime Green Giraffe.

Poetry: Paper, Pencil, and Heart

A passion and a dream;

An unbeatable team.

I put my mind and heart to the test,

So I always do my best.

I am a writer, an author if you must.

My passion burns bright on the inside, this I can trust.

Inside my head, words dance around and have fun.

How could I not write a story? The chances are none!

While some teens my age shop or play,

I write in my room the entire day.

Some people may think it’s a waste of time,

But I know my future will be better than fine.

Imagine my book sold in every store!

I promise it will not be a bore.

I shall sign books everywhere I go.

Readers will be thrilled, this I know.

I don’t need to be famous to inspire the youth.

I want to teach them that writing’s beneficial, and that’s the truth.

All I need is clean paper, a pencil, and heart,

To show children how to express themselves through writing, an important art!

Once they write a story, kids may enjoy exploring

The wondrous world they’ve created that’s far from boring.

If I can help just one person discover a passion for writing,

Then glorious success will rain upon me, how exciting!

Becoming an author is a dream for me,

So I shall work hard and write every moment I have free.

So if you don’t mind, I have work to do.

I must create a story that’s imaginative and new.

Divergent: Veronica Roth's Atlanta Visit

Veronica Roth, author of the bestselling young adult series Divergent rocked the Atlanta scene in July with a visit and book talk to Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia. Her book talk included a conversation with bestselling author of the Legend series Marie Lu, in which both authors discussed their writing processes, inspirations, and favorite Mario characters. Later, the two authors did an interview with CNN before heading off to their next book tour stops.

Do It Yourself: Muscle Tank

What you need:
- T-shirt - any color (can be found at any craft store)
- any color fabric paint you want , puffy paint works best (if you want to decorate it)
- scissors
- cardboard (only if decorating)
- plastic sheet (also if decorating)
- make-up sponge or paint brush (for decorating)

1) Take your shirt & fold it in half , with both sleeves touching.

2) Take the scissors

3) Cut off the sleeve and about an inch into the shirt

4) There you have it! A muscle tee!

Now if you want to take it a step further with decorating it, keep reading

The design I did was crosses, but you can do any that you choose

1) Take the plastic sheet and cut it into a large square - you don't want it to small because you will have to draw on it

2) Draw a cross or circle (for a full moon) on the plastic sheet & cut it out

3) Tape the plastic back up if needed.

4) Put a piece of cardboard in between the shirt

5) Put the paint on a plate & get the makeup sponge or paint brush

6) Place you plastic sheet stencil on the shirt anywhere u want & begin to fill up the shirt with your design !

You can put anything on the shirt you want it doesn't have to be the design I did. BE CREATIVE & HAVE FUN!

I am a young girl who dreams of a promising future.
I wonder every time I write if I will become a best-selling author someday.
I hear cheering as I break yet another 1-inch board with a potent kick. Kiap!
I see in the halls, my benevolent friends whose personalities are as bright as the sun.
I want to attend a boarding school where there is a strong focus on academics.
I am a young girl who dreams of a promising future.

I pretend to be no one else but me.
I feel proud whenever I accomplish a grueling or strenuous task.
I touch the community’s heart by demonstrating how a teen can make a difference.
I worry that I am not good enough to join Harvard.
I cry, eyes stinging and red, whenever I hear tragic stories of death or prejudice.
I am a young girl who dreams of a promising future.

I understand from experience that I can benefit from being challenged in class.
I say teens should put away their iPhones and volunteer in their community.
I dream, with a heart filled with passion, of becoming as famous as J.K. Rowling.
I try with great effort, to look at the glass half full rather than half empty.
I hope I can positively impact the world someday.

Those Crazy Dogs

Dogs can be cute, friendly, and smart, but they can also just be plain crazy or even embarrassing. Many Girl scouts have experienced a dog being at its craziest. But for all those dogs that we laugh our heads off about, remember, we’re not laughing at you… We’re laughing with you.

My sister and I (Alli a Senior in in troop 3348 and me a Cadette in troop 29337) had an old golden retriever named Cara. Boy was she rambunctious! Our neighbor came to visit that day. Usually when someone knocks at our door Cara just jumps at it. Not this time. Cara had a running start and jumped straight through the glass window in the door! Cara recovered very easily only to find that the door was now bullet proof!

Courtney Philips (a Cadette in troop 29334) is a dog lover. Her dog, Kendall, is a cat hater. She took her dog on a walk because she wanted to say hi to her friend down the street. When her friend opened the door to let her in. Kendall spotted the cat. The cat was running and Kendall was chasing her all around the house. The cat ran outside onto their unfinished porch. The cat was backing up very slowly and Kendall was walking toward her. The cat backed up so far that she fell straight off the porch, but then jumped up in barely half a second only to climb up a tree.

Savannah Moyer (senior in troop 27343) has a dog named Cody. Most of the times he acts like a scaredy cat. Cody has a list of many things that he’s afraid of. One of the things at the top of the list is a cat. When Savannah went to her friend’s house to say hi she brought Cody along. When Cody saw their cat, he pulled the leash to run away so hard that Savana had to let go. They searched everywhere that day, all day, to find Cody. He wasn’t anywhere to be seen. The mom had said that she would go get her car to drive around town to look for him. When she opened the garage door Cody was sitting there waiting patiently for them to come home.

My sister and I have a yellow Lab mix named Sunny. Her squirrel chasing is out of control. One winter we had a family of squirrels living in our attic. They were coming into the house by going through the drain pipes. We put a trash bag to capture the squirrels on the end of the pipe. Sunny saw movement in the bags and knew that she wanted what was inside. She got the squirrel in her mouth and scared it to death (we think because there were no marks on the squirrel). She went into our basement and hid the squirrel in our couch right as my dad walked in. He saw what she hid in the couch and was more grossed out than I was when my friend ate a mayonnaise pack. In the end the squirrels left our house and Sunny was glad she made “One small nibble for dogs, one giant bite for dog kind.”

Dogs are cute. Dogs are smart, but we all know that Dogs can be plain out crazy.
